UNISON Conference Reports

As UNISON Conference opens, thousands of Local Government and other public sector delegates have merged on the banks of the Mersey to debate and to decide on the direction our union will take during the coming year. For all those employed in the public sector these will be anything but dry and abstract discussions.

Today will see key debates; on Welfare Reform, threats to school support staff, poverty pay in Local Government and the drive to the bottom on terms and conditions. Running through all of this will be contributions from an overwhelmingly women-led conference on the disproportionate impact of, "Austerity," on our female membership and women in society and the attacks on trade unions and the, "facilities," that allow UNISON to work to meet your needs.

These are important questions at any time but now more than ever and decisions made at this and at National Delegates Conference this week will set out the kind of union we are and that you need us to be over the coming year. We will be aiming to post regular updates on these debates throughout conference. We welcome your comments and observations.
