Interim Payment agreed

UNISON has confirmed that the employers have agreed to pay Local Government staff 2.45% ( plus £100 for those on SCP 4,5,6) backdated to 1st April 2008 as an interim payment pending the outcome of ACAS talks. Doncaster Council say the money will be in December pay packets (even though UNISON claim it should be paid in November.) Unions meet with employers again on the 23rd October.

The key part of the post is the word "interim". The pay dispute is now with ACAS for arbitration so we don't yet know the final settlement yet.

It make sense to get some payment to members before Christmas as we don't know how long the arbitration process will last.

can ACAS award less? or the same???

They could award the same, but less is not an option, as the employers have already offered 2.45%...which is being paid next month.

This is all rather interesting.
The headline here says "Intrim" implying more is to come.
Just read other posts online and the employers don't say intrim. The full offer has been implemented. So when Acas just say 2.45 % that's it. It'll be Acas' fault not Unisons. Nice move, you've washed your hands and hung us out to dry.
2 days pay lost for nothing, well next to nothing (2.45%).
Merry Christmas ho ho ho

Just a quick note to those members that have posted comments:

Doncaster UNISON couldn't agree with you more. The decision to go to Arbitration was not one that we had any part to play in and certainly not a decision that we would have supported. Our members in Doncaster responded to the call to take strike action with great courage and dedication to fight against ordinary people being expected to take pay cuts dressed up as pay rises.

It is a shame that this was not reflected in the decisions made by those, "leaders," of our union who apparently find it so easy to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory!

The strike action in July was hard fought for and hard won. People took part in the clear expectation that they would not be let down by UNISON at a national level.

The important thing now is what we do on the ground. We all know that the employers side will want to impose a below inflation pay increase next year.

Ordinary members of UNISON need to make it clear to those at the top of our union that we will not tolerate cowardice in the face of these attacks. Lets be clear, our members do not deserve to be lead by timid donkeys who are unable to give proper voice to our members anger.

There is no reason why our members should have to draw any distinction between UNISON branches, regions and the national body - at the end of the day you are members of UNISON!!

But, for clarity, this decision was taken at a national level, without any reference back to you or to us.

This failure to act democratically cheapens our union and results in a betrayal of ordinary members. We must never allow this to happen again.

Doncaster UNISON branch executive will, tomorrow (Tuesday 4 Nov.) discuss a motion condemning this decision and calling for the link between New Labour and the union to be changed to better reflect the needs of members at every level.

How much longer is this going to take? We'll be striking again over job evaluation before this strike is even sorted!

We have no idea how long this will take.

I read an article yesterday on an NEC members (John McDermott)blogspot that said falling inflation and the icelandic bank collapse were being used by the employers to argue against an improved offer. You may get more up to date info by regularly cheking his blog. http://www.johnmcdsunionblog.blogspot.com/

John sits on the National Executive so finds out more than us in the branches.

Although I read it yesterday, he published it on 18/12/08 if you are looking for it on his blog.
